The history of Ayamonte dates back thousands of years, although Ayamonte as a city did not begin to grow until the time of the Tartessians. From there, both Romans and Arabs and later Christians began to grow around the mouth of the Guadiana River. The first settlements in Ayamonte are also dated to the Bronze Age.
Some claim that the human presence in Ayamonte dates back to 4,500 years ago, while the origins of the city date back to the time of the Tartessos civilization. From there, the Romans, Arabs and Christians began to develop this land, a development that began to occur around the Guadiana River.
As for the legacy, there are remains of a fortress of Roman origin, although centuries later, in the 13th century, to be specific, Sancho II of Portugal expelled the Arabs and, later, Alfonso XI ceded these lands to the county of Niebla.
In 1664, Felipe IV granted the title of the city to Ayamonte. The last historical milestone was in 1992 with the inauguration of the Centennial Bridge, which joins the two banks of the Guadiana, also connecting two countries, Spain and Portugal. Until then the crossings were carried out by ferry.
During the 16th and 17th centuries Ayamonte became one of the most important urban centers on the entire coast of Huelva.
In the 19th century, the scarcity of local products, which did not provide enough, made the people of Ayamonte jump into the sea, causing fishing to become an important engine of development for the area.
In our days, Ayamonte is a prosperous city that bases its economy on agriculture, fishing and increasingly on tourism.

If we refer to the history of Huelva, to the history of the province, the 15th century was historical for this land, since in 1492, in August, Christopher Columbus, a Genoese sailor who went down in history, set sail from Palos de la Frontera to discover the American continent.
La Pinta, La Niña and Santa María set sail from Palos de la Frontera in the direction of the Indies but they reached the new continent. The sailors of the three vessels were from Huelva, Cadiz and Sevillians, for the most part, which is worth noting, since their names were recorded for history in the church of San Jorge, in Palos de la Frontera, on a monolith. that remembers and honors them.
Also in Palos de la Frontera you can visit the Muelle de las Carabelas, where you will find replicas of the ships that set sail on Columbus' first voyage, the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa María, as well as an extraordinary interpretation center.
The date of 1755 is also engraved in the historical memory of the province, since that year an earthquake devastated this entire area causing extensive damage.
Ayamonte is a Spanish city in the province of Huelva, located on the border with Portugal and with Vila Real de Santo Antonio, the first Portuguese town to be found along the coast of the Gulf of Cádiz. It is a city divided into three nuclei, one inland, in Ayamonte, and two coastal ones, such as Isla Canela and Punta del Moral.
The distance between Isla Canela and Punta del Moral is only 6 kilometers, and in both places we find two of the best beaches on the Costa de la Luz, the beaches of Punta del Moral and Isla Canela. Golden sand, both urban and isolated environment, surrounded by dunes, pine forests and abundant vegetation.
Isla Canela and Punta del Moral are two places where you will find apartments to stay, apartments with one, two or more rooms, as well as hotels where you can rest and relax. On its beaches you will find numerous services such as hammocks and umbrellas, as well as beach bars and bars where you can eat. Remember that you can also rent an apartment in Ayamonte, although this option takes you a bit away from the beachfront, since it is an inland town.
On the other hand, we must emphasize that there are many activities that can be carried out in Ayamonte: excursions to the very nearby Portugal, eating good seafood, practicing sports activities, cultural visits ... All this in a few kilometers so that you do not have to go overboard the day driving. Above all, do not forget to do an activity, climbing the Guadiana, either by boat or walking along the coast, will be a unique experience.
For the rest, everything is clear. Just one more thing, enjoy your holidays in Ayamonte, on the border with Portugal, and a land of excellent beaches, good ham and the excellent white prawn. And, if all this seems not enough, know that just 5 minutes by car you will be in the Portuguese Algarve, in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, a town in the Faro region that is well worth visiting.
There are several things that can be done during your holidays in Ayamonte, activities for sun and beach lovers, for nature lovers, for sports lovers and for adventurers and hikers.
Tour the Guadiana River on foot, along the Spanish or Portuguese shore, by ferry, on a cruise or by boat; visit Portugal, especially the town of Vila Real de Santo António or Tavira, the closest; practice many sports such as hiking, diving, horse riding; taste typical dishes, traditional food of the area; or walk from Isla Canela to Punta del Moral through a green corridor through the beach enjoying nature ... these are just some of the activities you can do if you go on vacation to Ayamonte.
Also in Ayamonte we find many places to visit, things to see such as the temple of San Francisco, the church of San Salvador, the hermitage of San Sebastián, the Roman Mausoleum, in Punta del Moral, or the Botanical Park of Ayamonte.
Of course, lying down relaxing to sunbathe during your holidays in Isla Canela or Punta del Moral, is one of our tips.
And it is that enjoying in this beautiful town of Huelva is not difficult.
Besides being able to enjoy the beaches of Isla Canela or Punta del Moral, Ayamonte is a place where you can enjoy more things like its zoo.
The Ayamonte Zoo is an immense botanical garden located on Calle Alcalde Narciso Navarro. There you will find an immense number of plants and animals.
If you have small children, perhaps, this can be a good adventure option. Outdoors and surrounded by nature and animals characteristic of many places.

The Marismas de Odiel Natural Park is located between Punta Umbría and La Rábida, specifically at the mouth of the Odiel river and is a perfect place to visit during your holidays in Ayamonte.
There are 7,000 hectares that we can visit and that we can access through Gibraleón, Punta Umbría or Huelva capital.
These are marshes that rise and fall depending on the tides, and where we can find two reserves, the Burro and the Enmedio Island Reserve, as well as more than two hundred birds, both native and migratory.
Tours can be made in this place both by bicycle and on foot, although the most recommended is the canoe.
