Casa do Bandeirante is one of the typical examples of São Paulo rural dwellings built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in a vast area peripheral to the primitive urban core, located predominantly near the basin of two rivers: the Tietê and its tributary Pinheiros.
In this remnant set, identified from the 30s in principle by Mario de Andrade and later by Luis Saia, this house represents a rare building that follows the changes of the city of São Paulo since the first centuries of Portuguese colonization, evidencing in its architectural party and on its walls the memory of the constructive processes of the paulista colonial architecture, especially the pestle mud.
The history of Butantã, the region where the house is located, dates back to 1566, when Jorge Moreira and Garcia Rodrigues were granted a sesmaria at the stop known as Uvatantan. In 1602 there are records of this property as belonging to Afonso Sardinha, under the name of Ubatatá, Tupi term meaning "terra dura". Subsequently, their property was donated to the Chapel of Our Lady of Graces of the Jesuit Order.
With the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, the area went to auction and belonged to several owners, having been acquired by Eugênio Vieira de Medeiros in 1875, being known at the time with the name "Rio Beneath the Pine". São Paulo bought the property in 1912 and donated to the municipality, in 1944, the area that included the building then known as the "Old House of Butantã". After the donation the property remained undefined until the early 1950s.
In 1953, the Commission of the IV Centenary of São Paulo became responsible for the house promoting its restoration, carried out by architect Luis Saia and installing from October 30, 1955, an evocative museum of the era of flags, with its own collection, from the gathering of furniture, utensils and other historical objects in the interior of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Vale do Paraíba. Symbolically accumulating over the years diverse identities, the Casa do Bandeirante is permanently included in the city's tourist-historical itineraries, icon of an idealized historical past, space of criticism and contextualization of myths and preserved architectural document.
