The Cathedral of Cádiz is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Cádiz and Ceuta, in Spain. Construction began in 1722 and was not finished until November 28, 1838.
It receives the name of ´´Santa Cruz sobre el Mar´´ or ´´Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas´´ [1] although the people of Cádiz call it ´´Catedral Nueva´´ in contrast to the Old Cathedral (of the Holy Cross), built in the 16th century on the old Gothic cathedral ordered to be built by Alfonso X El Sabio.
It is located in the Plaza de la Catedral and is visible from almost anywhere in the city. It has visiting hours both for the interior of the enclosure and for the Torre del Poniente. The same entrance to the cathedral is used to access the Cathedral Museum, located in Plaza Fray Félix next to the Old Cathedral.

The portal is a conjunction of concave and convex shapes, characteristic of the Baroque style. The towers that rise on both sides of the façade culminate in the shape of an astronomical observatory; It is an exceptional fact that the Cathedral of Cádiz has bell towers of such height, since the construction of such structures was prohibited by the Bourbons, as they constituted an easy target for the enemy.
It has a Latin cross plan and three naves, the space being delimited by sets of columns. The main altar consists of a neoclassical temple dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Around the perimeter of the temple there are chapels (which at the time of construction were dedicated to housing the workshops necessary for the work of the temple) dedicated to the figure of Ecce Homo (work of ´´La Roldana´´) or to the patrons from the city; San Servando and San Germán, among others. One of these chapels houses the monumental Silver Custody, the work of Enrique de Arfe, which contains the Sacred Form on the Corpus Christi festival. It is worth highlighting the two marble figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul that are found next to the entrance of the two minor doors of the cathedral. On the main door there are statues of the patron saints of the city of Cádiz, San Servando and San Germán.
It has several domes, highlighting two; the main dome made up of a drum and the dome itself sits on pendentives and is covered on the outside with golden tiles that reflect the sun's rays during the day. Adjacent to it is another smaller dome, located on the main altar . Another smaller dome is located over a room dedicated to storing different relics and remains.
Under the main altar is the crypt, located below sea level where illustrious figures from Cádiz such as Manuel de Falla and José María Pemán are buried. An interesting element of the cathedral is its choir; it is situated in the center, before the main altar. True works of art are the choir stalls and the two organs it has. The Cathedral of Cádiz has an extensive musical archive of the old Musical Chapel, with works by composers such as Padilla, García Fajer or Delgado. Currently there is an intention to recover from oblivion all these works that, in most cases, were only played on the day of their premiere for the offices.
