Built on the top of Monte do Pilar - the largest granite monolith of Portugal -, in the border of the valleys of the Ave and Cávado rivers, within its walls was erected a seventeenth-century sanctuary, using the same stone of the old walls. The half-slope, in its access, can be appreciated the vestiges of an old romanized castro. Tradition states that in this castle, D. Teresa, the mother of D. Afonso Henriques (1112-1185), took refuge twice.
Although quite uncharacteristic, it is one of the most imposing Portuguese castles.
