The collection that gave rise to the Museum of Arts and Crafts (MAO), formed by original pieces from the 18th to the 20th centuries, was started about fifty years ago by engineer Flávio Gutierrez, father of Angela Gutierrez, creator of the Museum and President of the Cultural Institute Flávio Gutierrez. Over the years, the collected pieces went through a process of restoration, conservation and research, investment by the collector herself.
The constituted collection was donated to the public patrimony in 2005, when the Museum of Arts and Crafts opened, and became accessible to a large and diversified public, in a historic space located in the central region of Belo Horizonte, which favors its visitation.
After opening to the public, new pieces have been incorporated into the collection through donations from visitors and interested parties. To this end, a donation policy was structured that has favored this expansion of the collection.
Currently, the Museum's collection is in the process of being listed by IPHAN - National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage.
