The Museum of Image and Sound of Ceará MIS is a Brazilian museum located in the State of Ceará, in the city of Fortaleza. He specializes in documenting the audiovisual production of Ceará's culture.
Documentation of adiovisual material began in 1980 in the basement facilities of the Governador Menezes Pimentel State Public Library building. After a few years, MIS left the former Bibliography Heritage Department and became part of the Audiovisual Department. In this process, its collection was expanded, since it received the equipment, documents, photos, stickers, audio tapes and string from the extinct Cultural Reference Center (CERES), in addition to a collection of films from TV Educativa.
It was reopened on August 7, 1996 at its current headquarters. The house that now houses the MIS was designed by the architect José Barros Maia, (Mainha) to be the residence of Senator Fausto Augusto Borges Cabral, and was inaugurated in November 1951.
In 1963, as determined by Governor Virgílio Távora, it became an official residence and seat of the State Government, a function he held until 1971. Expropriated by the State Government, the headquarters of the Anthropological Museum of Ceará, which operated there until 1990, were made.
In addition to the sober and harmonious architecture, with gardens and flowers, the house has the protection of two porcelain lions from the city of Porto. Dating from the beginning of the 20th century, these pieces are the hallmark of this historic building that now houses the MIS.
MIS works with the cataloging of material about Fortaleza, plastic arts, crafts, parties, revelry, history, string literature, music, landscapes, personalities and types characteristic of Ceará, religiosity and music. The search for the collection is done through the database at the headquarters or over the internet on the website of the Ceará Department of Culture (SECULT). The collection consists of various media such as cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CDs, photographs, slides, books, vinyl LPs, wax discs, etc.
