The Museumsquartier (MQ) is an area of 60,000 square meters in the Seventh District of the city of Vienna, Austria. It is the eighth largest cultural area in the world, containing baroque architecture and various buildings such as MUMOK, which stand out for their contemporary architecture designed by architects Laurids and Manfred Ortner. The renovation of its interior began in April 1998. Three years later, the Museumsquartier was opened in two phases: one in June and one in September. The total cost of the constructions was 150 million euro (two billion Schilling). MQ is home to a variety of large and large museums such as the Leopold Museum and MUMOK and exhibition spaces for exhibitions of contemporary works of art such as the Kunsthalle Wien and festivals such as Wiener Festwochen.
The Museumsquartier also includes the Tanzquartier, a renowned international dance center, the Architektur Zentrum Wien, new media production studios, art studios, art centers specially designed for children and a variety of other events and festivals such as the known film festival Viennale, the International Dance Festival ImPulsTanz Vienna, among others. The Museumsquartier, moreover, is home to the quartier21, which features countless alternative art groups.
