The building was designed by the Chilean architect Emilio Jequier, neoclassical style, built in 1910 in commemoration of the centenary of the Republic.
The Palace houses the National Museum of Fine Arts. It was inaugurated on September 18, 1910, as a way to celebrate the Centennial of National Independence. The Palace has two main entrances: to the east enters the Museum of Fine Arts and the western entrance gives access to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Popular Art.
It was declared a National Monument in 1976.
It is one of the main centers of diffusion of the visual arts in Chile as in the other countries of the region.
