It is reported that this church was built by priests (monks) of the Jeronimos Monastery, which has the invocation of Santa Maria de Belém, so the church of Rio de Mouro was also given the invocation of Our Lady of Belém. Outside there is a tower Common features, with four pinnacles in the acroteric, very common in rural temples of the eighteenth century, and a mannerist portal that adorns the facade, topped by a limestone tombstone that reads as follows:

This date has been accepted as corresponding to the year of temple construction. But there are residues inside it that date back to 1563, such as a stringed holy water sink, Manueline type piece and a sculpture by St. Brás (16th century), which leads us to think that the Church was built earlier to this date. Nowadays it is largely uncharacterized by many interventions, especially in the 16th century and those following the 1755 earthquake. Inside the tile decoration installed in the 1960s replaced the 18th century cladding.
The altar is in wood carving. In the right and left ships there were two altars in gilded wood. The floor was in lage and there were graves near the altar. The high altar and the nave are separated by a Mannerist triumphal arch and the cradle vault ceiling is painted. On the left wall of the chancel there is a low marble relief with Renaissance features that illustrates the 15th century Annunciation, probably regional work inspired by archaic scholarly models.
The Mother Church of Rio de Mouro, invoked by Our Lady of Belém, is a 16th century building located in Rio de Mouro, Sintra, Portugal.
