This property belonged to De la Serna and was called Hueco de olivos (formerly unused properties were called hollow).
Due to the need for believers of non-Catholic religions (called dissidents), such as Protestants or Jews, it became necessary for them to own a cemetery, since cemeteries were only for people who died in the Catholic faith.
The first cemetery for dissidents was installed in a sector near the churchyard of the Socorro Church but ceased to be used in 1833 when its capacity was full, and it was abandoned until 1840.
Faced with the need for a new dissident cemetery in 1833 the second dissident cemetery was established there, which was administered by a commission made up of German, American and English citizens. The first Jews who lived in Buenos Aires were also buried, starting in 1870.
On September 14, 1891, the final closure of this second dissident cemetery was ordered, despite which the last burial was carried out on November 5 of that same year.
In 1915 the chapel that was on Hipólito Irigoyen street was demolished. In 1923, the transfer of the remains was concluded, but it is interesting to remember that not all of them were removed, since many unclaimed ones still remain in the square. Among the well-known buried people is Doña Elisa Chitti de Brown, the wife of Admiral Guillermo Brown, who is remembered in a bronze plaque. Also the patriot Colonel Don Juan B. Thorne, who died on August 1, 1885.
By ordinance number 889 B.M. 330 of April 14, 1925, it was assigned the name of "Plaza Primero de Mayo", and it was inaugurated on that same date in 1928 with the presence of Mayor Carlos M. Noel, and Minister of the Interior Vicente Gallo.
On the same day of the inauguration, the monument To Work by the sculptor Ernesto Soto Avendaño (1886-1969) is also discovered, who had obtained the first sculpture prize in 1921, and which was acquired by the Deliberative Council to be located in this square. The work represents a man of middle age who carries a heavy mass on his shoulder.
Also here is the Monument to the Homeland mast made by the engineers Bernardo Joselevich and Germán Joselevich and the sculptor Israel Hoffman. Donated by the Israeli community of Buenos Aires, it was inaugurated on October 19, 1951.
The ´´Plaza Primero de Mayo´´ is located in the Balvanera neighborhood in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This square is limited by the streets Hipólito Yrigoyen, Pasco and Alsina. It was remodeled in 2006.
It is also remembered in a plaque (today missing) Don Francisco Narciso de Laprida, president of the Congress who proclaimed National Independence on July 9, 1816.
