Sixteenth-century bridge in the shape of a keel and with three arches, ordered to be built in 1533, by D. João III.
Built on the river Ceira, in front of the historic center of the village, the Góis bridge was built in 1533. In the 18th century, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian was erected at its western end.
The structure of the bridge, of regular silharia, is formed by three pointed arches in the form of keel. The arch of the middle has greater span and height than the rest, bearing in the guards down a relief with the national shield flanked by crosses of Christ surmounting armillary spheres.
In 1868 the bridge was re-roofed, which led to the elevation of the pavement by 10 centimeters and conferred on the board the curved shape that it currently has. In the same campaign of works were executed sideways.
The adjacent chapel, with a central hexagonal plan, shows sections marked by pilasters and torn by a polyfoiled eye. In the main face it presents a vestibule of baroque taste, flanked by double pilasters and surmounted by cartela with scrolls decorated with a set of arrows, allusive to the patron saint of São Sebastião. The whole of the portal is topped by pediment interrupted by cross-eyeweed, flanked by fogaréus. On the left side, the volume of the sacristy is to the left, and to the right a bell-tower stands on the wall. The interior of the small temple is a unique space covered by dome with stone lock. It displays a polychrome wooden pulpit and, in the background, the gilded and polychrome carved altarpiece, topped by glitter held by figures of angels, which houses the pictures of São Sebastião and Nossa Senhora da Conceição, of eighteenth century manufacture, and the of Saints Cosme and Damião, dating from the nineteenth century.
Story
The bridge over the river Ceira was built by King João III in 1533, as evidenced by the charter promulgated on April 20 of that year, through which the monarch entrusted Simão Fernandes, squire-man of the town of Recardães, "Veador and Receiver of the money of the bridge that I have had to do in the Villa de Gois. " The work of the bridge was of the greatest importance, since up to that time the river was crossed at ford.
The date of foundation of the Chapel of San Sebastião remains unknown; it is known that in 1708 Manuel Dias Ourives instituted a bond destined to the cult in the same, by testamentary disposition, not knowing if the building existed already to the date.
However it is known that at the time of its construction, the place where the temple is implanted marked one of the entrances of the village. This type of location was common to many churches dedicated to the holy martyr, since Saint Sebastian protected the populations against hunger, pestilence and war, the chapels dedicated to him stood at the entrance of the villages serving as "protective barrier " the same.
In 1810 the building suffered a fire, set off by the troops of Massena, during the third French invasion, being restored in 1850.
