They originated thanks to the descent of more than 1,000 meters of the Agua Azul or Yax - Ha (in Tzeltal) Shumuljá and Tulijá rivers.



The impressive color that distinguishes these waters is due to the fact that the calcareous rock through which they pass is composed of various types of sediments but mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide, both white or beige. When light penetrates the water, it filters out all the colors except the blue that reaches the bottom and is reflected back to the surface, resulting in beautiful turquoise blue tones.



Agua Azul was declared in 1980 a Forest Protection Zone and Wildlife Refuge and later a Special Biosphere Reserve, due to the fact that a great variety of natural species and animals in danger of extinction inhabit its surroundings.



The population that lives in this place corresponds to the ethnic group ´´los choles´´, who live in the municipalities of Tila, Tumbalá, Sabanilla, Salto de agua and Palenque.













To get to the Agua Azul waterfalls, you can do it by road from Palenque, which is 69 kilometers away, or San Cristóbal de las Casas, which is 200 kilometers away.



If you arrive in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the Capital of the State of Chiapas, take the highway that leads to San Cristóbal de las Casas and from there head towards Palenque; Before reaching this city, you will find the detour that will take you to this wonderful natural attraction. The travel time is approximately 5 hours and thirty minutes.







For those who like adventure, with the help of local guides, they can find other waterfalls even more spectacular, as the stairway continues downstream until the river rushes to Tulijá, forming one of the most beautiful curtains of water.
