Chavín de Huantar was the capital of the Chavín Culture. It is an archaeological site located in the district of Chavín de Huántar, province of Huari, department of Ancash. Investigated by the Peruvian specialist Julio César Tello, this magical-religious center was built approximately in the year 327 BC. Its walls are made of stone and pyramidal structures. Despite not being the oldest archaeological site, the largest, the most beautiful in ancient Peru, it has been considered a pilgrimage center.
The construction features a red complex of stone pathways and tunics uniquely illuminated by beams of light that penetrate through strategically disposable conduits. Inside you can see the Monolithic Lanzón, a stone five meters high in which you can see fierce divinities and monstrous anthropomorphic figures, and the Heads Clavas, a kind of sentinels enclosed in the walls of the construction.
It is located 462 kilometers northeast of Lima, Peru, the place has an elevation of 3,177 meters above sea level, between the Andean mountains of the Black Mountain and the White Mountain. The location of the city in the main mantle of the Marañón river, between the coast and the jungle, is an ideal place for the collection and trade of merchandise.
The locals often refer to the place as "the Castle". The construction features a red complex of stone pathways and tunics uniquely illuminated by beams of light that penetrate through strategically disposable conduits. Inside you can enjoy the "Monolithic Lanzón", a tall stone five meters high, where you can see fierce divinities and monstrous anthropomorphic figures, the "Heads Clavas", a center of coves embedded in the castle walls.
Chavín was one of the first American cultures, contemporary to the Olmecs, in Mexico. The level of development that has been reached in agriculture, architecture and ceramics stands out, as well as in its administrative capacity, which has allowed it to dominate much of the north and center of Peru. Perhaps it is the importance of the castle of Chavín de Huantar: in its strategic location as a point of contact between the coast, mountains and jungle. For us, however, the monumental remains discovered in 1919 by the Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello have the value of being an essential part of our history.
