In the pre-Inca history of Chota, the influence of Chavín first and Mochica is noted with enough precision, Cabello de Balboa in his "Austral Miscellany" cites Naylamp, described as "Man of great talent and great value", and his god Chota, with express mention of the Acunta plateau and one of its descendants who also bore this name. In those conditions of a rebellious and disorderly people, the Spanish conquest found it.



During the war with Chile, after the battle of San Pablo, the Araucanians entered Chota, the town decided to poison the waters of Colpamayo, the Chileans ordered the fire of Chota, On August 29, 1882, the city of Chota was burned by the Chilean troops and in retaliation for the defeat they suffered in São Paulo and considering it as the headquarters of the north.



Thousands of houses fell, the church was also set on fire, miraculously saving the beautiful Image of the Patron, Mary Immaculate, with her valuable jewels and clothing, whose dogma was proclaimed on December 8.



The city of Chota dates back to Pre-Inca times, and Inca, belonged to the Huambos village in 1777, was founded on November 1, 1559 and was recognized by the name of "All Saints." The proclamation of the independence of Chota, was on January 12, 1821, by the mayor Mr. Inocencio Consan Chiflón, on February 06, 1821, receives the name of province according to Mr. Horacio Villanueva in the provisional statute given by Don José de San Martín during the protectorate.



The image of the Patron Virgin of chota, has great artistic value. It is made of cedar and has a baroque style and with the characteristics of mountain images, it measures 1.65m.

The Chota district is located in the central part of the province, in the northern Andean region of Peru. Its capital is located on the Acunta plateau at 2,388 meters above sea level and 150 km north of Cajamarca or 219 km east of Chiclayo, Lambayeque.

Adorned by a circle of hills it rises on a beautiful plateau called Acunta at 2,382 m.a.s.l. the city of Chota, just 150 km from Cajamarca (north-eastern part of Peru), or 219 km from Chiclayo. In the same way, it is surrounded by the Chotano, Colpamayo, Doña Ana and San Mateo rivers.



Here is the largest bullring in Peru after Acho (Lima), bullfights are very popular during the patronal feast of June 24.



Several historical and heroic events took place in this province, such as the fire in the city of Chota on August 30, 1882 by the Chilean army; the dramatic episodes of the failed revolution of 1924 against the Leguía government, the romantic adventures of Eleodoro Benel, the execution of the brave military man Colonel Samuel del Alcázar; and the creation of the peasant rondas.



There are important archaeological remains such as the Torres de Chiguirip, Agomarca and Chetilla, the ruins of Churucancha, Condorcaga, Andamayo, Samacuy, Huambos viejo and Chot-Marc. You can also enjoy its hot springs located in Cumpampa (Tacabamba), La Tacshana (Conchán), Choropampa and Chadín, and those of Chancay on the border with the province of Santa Cruz.



In the province of Chota, most of the population are mainly engaged in agricultural activities, crafts, commerce, small industry, public administration, etc.
