Until relatively recently, the Catatumbo region was considered as Tibú and fantastic stories are told about it. The dense jungle, electrical storms, brave Motilone Indians, wild animals and mighty rivers were favorite topics in family gatherings in the early and mid-20th century, in cities like Cúcuta and Maracaibo.
When referring to Catatumbo, one must necessarily speak of oil and the Motilon-Bari tribe.
Around 1945, the Colombian Petroleum Company (COLPET) demolished several hectares of the mountains where the urban area is today, in order to build houses for the families of its employees.
This project was later scrapped, causing some of the workers to build their own ranches using COLPET's flattening.
On March 8, 1945, the council of Cúcuta approved agreement number 5 by means of which the village of Tibú was created.
Father Vergara built the cathedral, whose structure is made of iron and concrete.
In 1975, the committee for the municipality of Tibú was organized, achieving its objective with the approval of ordinance number 3 of November 1977.
