Properly speaking, the origins of the formation of Cucutilla have not been verified because the archives of the municipality and the parish have disappeared.
But from studies made regarding his historical research, it is said that the Chitarera aboriginal tribe, inhabitant of the region, was located especially at the point of Cucutilla, being the Indian Chapiro chief there. Regarding the name, if one thinks that these aborigines maintained very close relationships with the chieftain Cúcuta, the hypothesis that it is a diminutive of Cúcuta cannot be ruled out and we could at the same time suppose that it was a tribute to the man who called those regions with respect to the founder, although it has not been verified by any means, tradition has taught that it was Camilo Torres Delgado and that it took place in 1780.
It was erected a municipality in 1812 elevated to the category of parish in 1814. According to oral tradition, the liberator Simón Bolívar passed through the town several times and in one of them he spent the night, a fact that is remembered with commemorative plaques.
