Mount Fitz Roy or Cerro Chaltén is a mountain located on the border of Chile with Argentina in the region of Patagonia near the town of El Chaltén.
El Chaltén is the best point to start trekking to the lookouts on Mt. The name Fitz Roy is a tribute to Robert FitzRoy, captain of the HMS Beagle, ship that took Charles Darwin on his voyage around the world.
Although its altitude is only 3,375 meters, the Fitz Roy is considered by many professional climbers as the greatest of all challenges, because its vertical walls require a lot of climbing techniques. In addition, the climate of the region is exceptionally bad and treacherous, fact that already cost the life to many that tried it to rise.
The trail to Fitz Roy is well marked, no guide is required, but it is important to have a map and be aware of signage. So avoid going alone. The trail is open to anyone. But in return, it will require a lot of its physical stamina to win the 12km one-way, and the 12km return.
