The area where Girardota is today was inhabited by the Nutabes and Yamesíes Indians, who were basically dedicated to agriculture. In 1620 a group of colonists from Antioquia settled in the San Diego area and founded the village, which remained dependent on the city of Santa Fe de Antioquia (capital of the department at that time), until 1675 when it became dependent on the village. from the Villa de Medellín.
In 1648 these lands were acquired by Doña Margarita de Alarcón, Miguel Marín's widow, on her death they were auctioned off in the public square of Santa Fe de Antioquia in 1651, they were acquired by Antonio Gómez de Salazar for his brother Juan Gómez de Salazar, governor of the Province, who established his home in the place that has become known as San Esteban where he had a herd that he called ´´Hatogrande´´ and a little to the north another, the ´´Hatillo´´, perhaps because it was smaller. These herds, as well as the one called ´´Hatoviejo´´, passed into the power of Mrs. Ana de Castrillón.
On May 11, 1734, Dr. Sancho Londoño Zapata, Doña Javiera's brother, bought the lands of Hatogrande. They were inherited by Pbro. Doctor Sancho Londoño Piedrahíta, doña Javiera's nephew and from him they passed to Fr. Manuel Londoño Molina who is considered the founder of the town.
Father Manuel Londoño M. was a very wealthy person. From the various wills that he granted, it is known that he had a two-story house in the main square of Medellín; house of equal conditions in Hatogrande; several country houses, as well as several mines and salt flats, lime scale and many lands at various points; He declared that he had 45 cattle in the Eyebrow that did not have a brand; 150 animals including mares, horses, mules, mules, padrones, foals, "everything that was marked with my iron"; two sugar mills, two hundred and fifty cattle in Hatogrande and also 110 slaves, as well as many other things. He owned a chapel in Hatogrande, which he endowed with lavishness and for which he brought the image of the Fallen Lord.
On December 31, 1757, Governor José Barón de Chaves created the Hatogrande party, dependent on the Cabildo de Medellín. In the ecclesiastical it depended on Copacabana.
On September 21, 1833, Governor Juan de Dios Aranzazu created the parish. The main part of the decree says: "In the district of Hatogrande, where the Chapel of the Fallen Lord is located a new parish with the name of Girardota to preserve the memory of the hard-working Colonel and distinguished Atanasio Girardot."
The central government gave its approval shortly after. The population was erected with 1,824 inhabitants, thus beginning the civil life of the new Municipality of Girardota. It was the time when the creation of a parish was in turn equivalent to the erection of a district. (The same case of Caramanta and other districts). For his part, the Vicar Capitular Fr. José Miguel de la Calle issued the decree ratifying the erection in 1834. Ordinance 37 of April 29, 1912 made a modification in the name by providing that it would be Girardot but Ordinance 18 of April 11 of the following year, 1913 provided : ´´As of the publication of this Ordinance, the Municipality of Girardot will be officially called Girardota.
Girardota is a municipality in Colombia, located in the Aburrá Valley in the department of Antioquia. It limits to the north with the municipalities of San Pedro de los Milagros and Donmatías, to the east with the municipalities of Barbosa and San Vicente, to the south with the municipalities of Barbosa and Guarne, and to the west with the municipality of Copacabana.
Its name was given in honor of the hero of the homeland Atanasio Girardot; They did not want to baptize Girardot because in the department of Cundinamarca there was already a population with that name, so it was modified to Girardota. It was also called Hato Grande at one time.
The municipality of Girardota is located north of the Aburrá Valley, has an area of 82 km² and is part of the metropolitan area of the city of Medellín. Its urban area of 1.5 km² does not yet have a conurbation; like most of the municipalities that make up the metropolitan area. The headland has a temperature of 22 ° C and a height of 1,425 meters above sea level
The territory of the municipality is mountainous and its relief corresponds to the Central Colombian Cordillera (Andean mountain system). The main water basins are the Medellín River that runs through the entire valley and the El Salado, El Tigre, La Correa, Caimito, La Silva and Los Ortegas streams, among others.
The main height is Alto de Las Cruces at 2,550 meters above sea level, which it shares with the municipality of Copacabana.
The Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley is a political-administrative entity that is located throughout the Aburrá Valley at an average altitude of 1,538 meters above sea level.
The Area is made up of 10 municipalities, and is crossed from south to north by the Medellín River which, originating to the south of it in the municipality of Caldas, and in the north, in the municipality of Barbosa, takes the name of Río Porce.
It was the first Metropolitan Area created in Colombia in 1980, and it is the second Metropolitan Area in population in the country after the Capital District of Bogotá. The total population, which adds the urban and rural population of the ten cities, is 3,312,165 inhabitants.

Subscription television companies offer their own channels.
The town has a wide variety of AM and FM stations, both with local and national coverage, of which most are managed by Caracol Radio or RCN Radio, although there are other independent stations with great tuning, such as Todelar and Super.

Taxis. There are numerous taxi companies that cover the entire metropolitan area, and among them there are some with bilingual services in English. The taxi ordering service by phone is the most common and safe. Some companies provide intercity services.
