In a dominant position, overlooking the Campo de São Mamede, this monument is linked to the foundation of the Portucalense County and to the independence struggles of Portugal, being popularly designated as the cradle of nationality.
Classified as National Monument, in 2007 it was informally elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
According to tradition, here was born the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques (1112-85). The sink where it is said to have been baptized is found in the Romanesque chapel of the Church of São Miguel da Oliveira, in the west sector of the castle.
