It is located 14 km. south of La Serena and 2 km. of Coquimbo. It is an old fishing cove and copper smelter. Today it is an attractive tourist resort where there are camping spaces, a yacht club, hotels, cabins and other tourist services.
In the year 1578 the English privateer Francis Drake discovered the bay of La Herradura, named for its shape. From that moment, the bay became a refuge for pirates and filibusters, such as Bartolomé Scharp, Eduardo Davis, Jorge Anson and others of lesser renown.
This bay is characterized by having a calm sea, suitable for swimming and water sports. Its waters are warm.
It has an extension of 2 km. long and 40 m wide. It is suitable for bathing and water sports such as windsurfing and diving, among others.
It is located 12 km. south of La Serena and 462 km. north of Santiago de Chile
Boat
Access by boat is restricted to international cruise ships that arrive at the port of Coquimbo.
By bus
There are continuous departures from La Serena and spas near Coquimbo. From Santiago there are departures every day. Check with the corresponding Terminal.
By car
From the north or south, you must take Route 5 towards Coquimbo or La Serena. From Copiapó it is 344 km. and from Iquique 1,397 km. To the south, from Santiago there are 462 km. and from Los Vilos 231 km.
By plane
You must travel to La Florida de La Serena airport and then take transportation to Coquimbo. Alternatives include taxis and public transportation.
On one side of the beach is the Puerto de Guayacán, operated with a mechanical pier. During your visit you can visit the Church of La Herradura and the Yacht Club.
