Itinerary to visit Cinque Terre in Campervan (MotorHome)
Published by:   Toni Martins
Recommended Season:   All year
Recommended time:   3 days
Visiting the Cinque Terre in a motorhome starts with the question: where to park? In Levanto or La Spezia? These are the two towns closest to the Cinque Terre and where you can park, stay overnight and visit.
Do not forget that none of the villages has a place to park or park a motorhome, even for a car in some it is quite difficult and requires walking a lot.
After analyzing the two locations, taking into account in our case several factors: Distance to the train station, security, convenience and services as we were going to stay a few days and we didn't take into account the price of the park. Then a place where the park was not too far from the center because we needed to go to the supermarket, to the restaurant, without having to walk far and for all that we decided to stay in the Acqua Dulce park (Detailed information below). It was only 15 minutes on foot to the train station, and 5 minutes to the historic center, and to the beach (although we didn't use it as we visited in winter.
Why did we choose to visit Cinque Terre by train? Well, in winter there are only 3 ways to visit the villages (on foot, by train, by car) of course the most comfortable, fastest way is by train, in tourist seasons there is also the possibility of visiting by boat, but from what we have analyzed it was not the option that suited us because the boat does not visit Corniglia and visiting the 4 villages by the sea in a single day is quite short, you end up seeing the port area and little else. So we chose to do everything by train, without having to get up very early, dividing the visit into 2 days, Monterosso, Manarolla and Vernazza on the 1st day, Riomaggiore and Corniglia on the 2nd day.
Although we stayed 6 days, it was our decision to rest and reorganize the trip because to visit Cinque Terre, you only need to stay 3 nights.
The distance between each village is on average 5 minutes by train, we opted to buy a pass for 2 days (cost 26.5 € per person) which includes the use of the toilet, Internet on the train and at the stations (not working) and the minibus from Corniglia station to the village and back. If you buy one section at a time, it might be cheaper, but it's much more troublesome.
In La Spezia there are options for Campervan Areas, cheaper, but we prefer Levanto due to the conditions as I wrote before and the distance to the train station.
Below is step-by-step information about the park and the 5 villages of the Cinque Terre group.

When we were analyzing which park we would stay in during our visit to the Cinque Terre, we checked all the options, both in Levanto and in La Spezia and according to what we wanted we decided on the Acqua Dulce park. This is because it was the one that was open at this time of the year, we visited Cinque Terre in mid-February, it was the one that was located (among the open ones) closest to the train station, the city center and everything. In addition, the park has excellent infrastructure, the bathrooms have heating, piped music, are very clean and everything is new. The motorhome support services are complete and very well equipped and maintained. It has a very well equipped laundry service, which for us, who have been traveling for 2 weeks, was very important. It has great security and is only a 15-minute walk from the station and a 5-minute walk from the center with bars, restaurants and supermarkets.
That's why this was our choice as a park, but it's good to bear in mind that in tourist seasons, it's necessary to book because even now it's almost full.
At this time of year, the daily rate at the park is 37.5 Euros

Monterosso is the largest of the Cinque Terre villages, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The village of Monterosso is structured in a unique way, as the Aurora tower, which was built on Mount San Cristoforo as a defense against pirate attacks, today divides the medieval and ancient part of the village from the modern and residential one. Monterosso was our first village to visit, as soon as we got off the train, we found a place that was nothing like what I had seen in photos about the village, the fact is that the station is located in the most modern part, you have to follow the On the left, pass the Aurora Tower and then we arrive at the village. Next to the Aurora Tower, we took the opportunity to go up a bit more and visit the São Francisco viewpoint and the church of the Monastery of the Capuchin Friars. The monastery was closed for works. Once in the village, you can visit the church of San Giovanni, the oratory of the Confraternita dei Neri Mortis et Orationis, and the statue of Neptune, placed on the rocky point next to the beach of Fegina over the Ligurian Sea. Monterosso is the village with the biggest beaches and the best beach equipment.

Vernazza

Vernazza was the village that I most enjoyed visiting, very beautiful, it has a port with a beautiful setting in the landscape, the little Genoese-style colored houses on the rocks, the narrow alleys and very beautiful alleys.
The main street leading down to the sea is very interesting, without a doubt my favourite. If you decide to visit Vernazza by car, don't forget to park your car in a small parking lot that is 1km away from the village and costs €3 per hour, then you have to go down and up, so it's better to go by train. What to visit in Vernazza, without a doubt the port, the church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia of the SEC. XIV, the Doria castle, with its Belforte guard tower (but pay attention to the times and time of year, we climbed all that staircase which was a struggle and was closed when we arrived) but it was worth it for the alleys we went through. The visit to Vernazza lasts no more than 2 hours (not counting a stop for lunch or relaxing in one of the many typical bars).

Corniglia

The smallest village in the Cinque Terre group, Corniglia is not by the sea like the others. For this reason and because access is difficult, Corniglia is the least visited and also the least accessible. Despite also having a train station, Corniglia is 1200 meters from the station if you go up by car, or 900 meters if you go up on foot. Pedestrian access is very hard and difficult, the best way is to take the minibus that leaves the station for the center of the village and costs 2.5€. Visiting the village of Corniglia, there is not much to see, except the church of San Pietro, which of all the ones I saw in the Cinque Terre is the prettiest, with really beautiful paintings, then there is Largo Taragio which gives access to the viewpoint of where you have a beautiful panoramic view of the coast and from where you can see Manarolla. Corniglia is not advisable to go by car. Even though there is a car park 500 meters from the village, the road to Corniglia is very winding, and the route is often damaged by landslides.

Personally, I really liked Manarolla, it's a village without a beach, with a small fishing port with clear waters, and houses that look like they're perched on the rocks.
As soon as we got to the terrace where you have a view of the main street, what immediately caught my attention were the boats parked on the street. Along the main street until you reach the port, there are boats parked everywhere, maybe because this is the time of year when they don't fish because it's winter but it's very interesting to see. Manarolla has a promenade that leaves the port on the right towards Corniglia, where you can have the best views of the village and where you can take the best photos. One of the attractions of Manarolla takes place between December and January which is the nativity scene. Manarolla the time required to visit does not exceed 2 hours,

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is the furthest village from Levanto, but at the same time the closest to La Spezia. The train station is on the other side of the hill, it is necessary to go through a tunnel to reach the center of the village and the port area.
It is one of the most beautiful from my point of view, but also the most difficult to visit if you want to know every corner. Riomaggiore can be divided into 3 parts, the center, the train station area and the sinners' quarter. All the Cinque Terre villages have a lot of trails, here in Riomaggiore there is one of the best known (Sentiero dell'Amore), but there are also 2 trails that leave from Manarolla, one by the sea and the other inland. The place with the best views of Riomaggiore is the square next to the partially destroyed castle or going up in the elevator next to the Church. (Access to the Church is a bit difficult, stairs and more stairs). To visit these villages you need to be in good physical shape, if you want to know everything they have to visit. The main point of visit that everyone goes to is the fishing port and the fishermen's quarter, it has a very great beauty, clear and transparent waters, the fishermen's boats are small and colorful. Afterwards, enjoy the bars and restaurants in the alleys and alleys of the village. Other places to visit are: The church of San Giovanni Battista, The church of Santa Maria Assunta and the main street that leads to the sea.
