In 1770, the Marquis of Pombal acquired it being in the possession of his family for more than a century.
Inaugurated in 1884, with the designation of National Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology, José de Figueiredo was responsible for its organization and later appointed its first director.
At the moment the museum is known as Museum of the Green Windows, because that is the color of its windows. In 1940 an annex was built, which includes the main façade. This one occupied the place of the Carmelite Convent of Santo Alberto, destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. The only thing that resisted was the chapel, now integrated in the museum.
