The district of Oyotún was created by law 5290, of November 23, 1925.
It is located at the eastern end of the Chiclayo province and is one of the furthest from the seashore. Part of the district is in the natural region of La Chala and another part is in Yunga.
Its limits are: to the North, with the district of Chongoyape and the department of Cajamarca; to the South, with the district of Nueva Arica and the department of Cajamarca; to the East, with the department of Cajamarca; to the west, with the districts of Zaña and Chongoyape.
The Oyotún, has its origin in some Quechua word, being the most probable that it derives from the word ACLLUTUM, which in the official language of the Incas means: Set, Group or Place of families, from which it can be concluded that its name has It originates from some tribe, group or place of families that live in this place.
In the territory of this district there are several archaeological remains that have not yet been well studied, but that show the development of pre-Hispanic human groups of great importance. Among them are:
The Eagle of Oyotún, a gigantic 60x59m geoglyph; It is one of the largest on the North Coast of Peru.
The geoglyph of La Compuerta, 65 m. long by 23 m. at its greatest width; represents a mythical figure with human, feline and ommitomorphic characters.
Huaca El Toro, various remains.
Cerro Motete, various remains.
