The Instituto de la Patagonia, founded in 1969 and since 1985 incorporated into the University of Magallanes, is a study and research center whose geographic subject is the southern American region, particularly that of Magallanes. Its permanent objectives are to contribute to the knowledge, development and dissemination of the human and natural sciences in what specifically refers to human events in time and the characteristics of natural ecosystems.



The Instituto de la Patagonia publishes annually and regularly since 1970 the annals of the Instituto de la Patagonia in its series Ciencias Humanas y Ciencias Naturales, a magazine that collects contributions derived from the scientific activity of its researchers and third parties associated with it.

By plane

There are daily frequencies from the Santiago de Chile airport in 3 and a half hours of flight, and from Puerto Montt that you should consult.



By car

To get there by car, you must continue from Santiago de Chile on Route 5 South to Osorno where you must cross the Cardenal Samoré Border Crossing to the Argentine Republic, which will take you to the Patagonian sector. Take the Chilean road back through Puerto Natales.

The Institute offers the traveler the possibility of obtaining information and documentation in relation to Patagonian science, culture and techniques. Within its facilities there is a library, a botanical garden, crafts; the Museum of Remembrance, which consists of a display of carriages, machinery and tools used in pioneer times; it also has a maritime pavilion, a typical house from the colonial era, an old garage, etc., with special museum exhibits.
