The dunes are made up of silica dunes, fine white sand that move with the wind, and are the center of a much wider desert region that forms the Chihuahua desert; however, unlike the surrounding areas large plant population of thorn bushes that impede sand mobility, the dune area is virtually free of sand, which sometimes causes sandstorms that impede visibility.
The dunes extend mainly in the municipality of Juárez and in the neighboring Ascension and Guadalupe, are crossed from north to south by the Federal Highway 45 and the Mexico-Ciudad Juarez Railway, in recent days constitute a tourist attraction, especially of adventure turbulence.
Médanos de Samalayuca is a large desert area located on the northern tip of the Mexican state of Chihuahua, about 50 kilometers south of Ciudad Juárez. They get their name because the main population of the region is the city of Samalayuca.
On June 5, 2009, a decree by President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa erected the Samalayuca Medano and Fauna Protection Area.
