It was formerly known as ´´Campo de la Gloria´´ since here the people of Buenos Aires defended themselves heroically during the second English invasion of 1807, and as ´´Campo de Marte´´, due to the military exercises carried out by the Regiment of Grenadiers on Horseback. At present, this square designed by Carlos Thays has an excellent landscaping and two main monuments: the monument to General José de San Martín and the monument to those who died in the Falkland Islands war. It is surrounded by office buildings and residences.
It is bounded by Florida streets, Santa Fe Avenue, Esmeralda, Maipú and Libertador Avenue.
The Monument to those who died in the war in the Falkland Islands and South Atlantic is made up of 25 black marble plates with the names of all the soldiers who died in that war (l982).
