Palacio Cruz e Sousa, formerly Rosado Palace, is a palace located in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, located in the historic center of the capital, opposite the city's main square, Praça XV, having served as the State Government Palace.
In it were born illustrious figures, such as the historian Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay, son of Viscount de Taunay, former provincial president (1876 - 1877), and former governor Aderbal Ramos da Silva (1947 - 1951). In addition to the dances held there and other solemnities, the palace received illustrious visits, such as D. Pedro I in (1826) and D. Pedro II in (1845 and 1865).
The palace was the scene of a dramatic episode in the wake of the Federalist Revolution, when, in 1891, it was taken by storm by revolutionaries who opposed the policy of Floriano Peixoto in Santa Catarina, the acting vice president at the time.
Between 1894 and 1898, under the government of Hercílio Luz, the building was renovated, losing, since then, the original colonial characteristics and assuming eclectic language, full of decorative elements.
Ten allegorical statues carved by Italian artist Gabriel Sielva adorn the exterior of the building, crowning the platbands. Among them, the patron saint of the state, Santa Catarina; the evocative nymph of the seas, Amphitrite; and the mythological god Mercury, composing with two barrels, allegory allusive to Santa Catarina's commerce and industry, respectively, being the last one located at the top of the lateral façade, on the right. The sidewalk tiles in front of the palace were imported and laid in the year 1910.
Inside the palace stands the majestic staircase, with its balustrade and Carrara marble counters, pieces crafted in Italy. Bronze statues of medieval knights and a beautiful art-nouveau stained glass enrich the décor.
The palace, listed by the state and the municipality, ceased to host the office of the state governor in 1984. It has been a museum since 1986. It was restored in 1977 and 1984. In 1979 it was renamed the Cruz e Sousa Palace in honor of the Great Santa Catarina poet.
In front of the palace, there was a major demonstration against the military regime in 1979, which became known as Novembrada.
In the Martinho de Haro room there are releases and exhibitions on art and history.
The former palace also houses the centenary Santa Catarina Historical and Geographic Institute.
